115.23 meters above the Adriatic Sea – this is the lowest water level of Lake Neusiedl that has been measured on March 12 since 1965, confirmed Christian Sailer from the main department for water management in Burgenland, media reports.

The light rain forecast for the next few days is unlikely to raise the water level in the long term. Further talks will be held in April regarding the planned supply from the Hungarian Danube.
Since the beginning of the water level regulation in 1965 with the raising of the water level, no lower value had been measured on March 12th. It was 115.23 last Saturday, said Sailer on Monday. The high on that day was 115.81 in 1996. Rain was announced for the next few days, but it shouldn’t be particularly heavy, he said.
On the other hand, the water level is to be sustainably raised by diverting it from the Moson-Danube on the Hungarian side. As soon as line construction begins in Hungary, the work will take place in parallel in Seewinkel. The talks on this are to be continued in April, Sailer explained.
In the past, Lake Neusiedl has repeatedly had low water levels and even dried up completely. This was documented around 1870, when it had dried out completely for five years.
