1:1 in Oliver Glasner’s first appearance as Crystal Palace coach

Oliver Glasner’s first journey as Crystal Palace coach led to Liverpool: There his new team played against Everton at Goodison Park. Hours after his signing was announced, he watched the 1-1 draw from the stands alongside club boss Steve Parish.

In the 66th minute, Glasner was smiling, as the TV cameras caught. In a hard-fought game, Jordan Ayew scored to give Crystal Palace the lead. Center forward Jean-Philippe Mateta tried to keep the ball with his back to the goal, he jumped in front of the legs of Ayew, who hit the left corner from 20 meters.

The Londoners didn’t manage to take the lead over time. Amadou Onana made it 1-1 with a header from a corner (84′), goalkeeper Sam Johnstone didn’t come out of his goal with enough energy.

Five points ahead of the relegation zone

Interim coach Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington set up a 3-4-3 – in contrast to the four-man chain that Glasner’s predecessor Roy Hodgson had previously mostly nominated. McCarthy said before kick-off that he had had no contact with Glasner – but the Innviertler will have taken positive note of the switch to his preferred three-man defense.

Crystal Palace remained in 16th place in the table and is now five points ahead of Luton in the first relegation zone. The promoted team played one less game.

Debut on Saturday against Burnley

On Saturday Glasner will be in the coaching zone for the first time in the Premier League. The opponent at home at Selhurst Park is the penultimate Burnley. Glasner had already prepared for the next opponent a week later on a secret mission: he had already observed Tottenham against Wolverhampton (1:2) on Saturday. Crystal Palace will be visiting their London city rivals on March 2nd.
