THE ESSENTIAL
- The immune system defends and protects our body from external attacks.
- Turmeric is a spice that has powerful antioxidant properties.
The immune system is the body’s defense barrier once morest external attacks. It protects us from certain diseases such as the flu, nasopharyngitis or angina which are very frequent during the winter. Certain foods also help to strengthen it. “There is no doubt that a healthy diet improves your immunity to disease”says Dr. Cassandra Calabrese, an American immunologist, to the Cleveland Clinic.
In her interview, the specialist lists the best foods that boost the immune system. She cites in particular citrus fruits such as orange, grapefruit or lemon which contain vitamin C. These fruits therefore strengthen the antioxidant defenses of the body.
The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of ginger
Often added to spice up dishes, garlic contains the chemical compound alliin, which stimulates immune function and helps fight off flu and cold viruses.
Rich in minerals and vitamin C, ginger is a real health ally: “It may help with nausea, but ginger also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects”explains Dr. Cassandra Calabrese.
Widely used in Asia, turmeric is known for its antioxidant properties, but this spice also acts as an anti-viral. Indeed, turmeric has a high content of curcumin, the main pigment of this spice, which reduces inflammation and helps fight once morest free radicals.
Which Vegetables Boost the Immune System?
Regarding immune-boosting vegetables, Dr. Cassandra Calabrese recommends consuming bell peppers, which contain good amounts of vitamin C, and spinach, which contains beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, known for its antioxidant power.
Broccoli is also recommended to fight once morest viruses and bacteria. These crucifers contain glutathione, an antioxidant, which attacks free radicals, and therefore strengthens the immune system.
Immune system: foods to avoid to protect it
Consuming yogurts promotes the health of the intestinal microbiota, in particular thanks to the probiotics they contain. The intestinal microbiota consists of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and parasites, which ensure the proper functioning of the body. These dairy products make it possible to preserve these “good” germs within the intestine and to eliminate the “bad” ones which might tire the immune system.
Almonds and sunflower seeds contain vitamin E, an antioxidant, which also helps fight infections.
To protect the immune system, the doctor also recommends reducing the consumption of red meat and processed foods such as industrial cakes. These products have saturated fats which are bad for the body.
