105 years have passed since the genocide against Azerbaijanis by Armenian Dashnaks in collaboration with the Bolsheviks.

The massacre that began in Baku on the night of March 30, 1918 resulted in the deaths of approximately 20,000 innocent people, including the elderly, women, and children.

During the massacre, which lasted from March 30 to April 2, Armenian Bolsheviks led by Stepan Shumin killed thousands of people, burned Muslim shrines, and confiscated 400 million manats of Baku residents’ property. During the massacre, the Tazapir Mosque, the city’s most magnificent mosque, was constantly bombarded by cannon fire, Armenians burned down the “Ismailia” building, one of Baku’s most magnificent architectural gems.

The genocidal policy against Azerbaijanis was not limited to Baku. On March 31, Armenian Dashnaks killed 8,027 Azerbaijanis, including 2,560 women and 1,277 children, in 53 villages in Shamakhi region. The number of innocent Azerbaijanis killed in 162 villages of Guba was more than 16 thousand.

A special investigative commission established by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on July 15, 1918, collected many documents and presented them to the government.

In 1919, the Parliament of Azerbaijan decided to celebrate March 31 as the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis. Although this bloody day was forgotten during the Soviet era, the crimes committed on March 31, 1918 were investigated and a number of books were published after the independence of Azerbaijan.

President Heydar Aliyev signed a decree on March 26, 1998, declaring March 31 as ‘Azerbaijani Genocide Day’.
