At least 104 people have been killed and 760 wounded in a chaotic incident in which Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) troops opened fire as starving Palestinian civilians gathered around food aid trucks, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. , controlled by Hamas.

CNN cannot independently confirm these figures.

People had gathered around the newly arrived aid trucks in the hope of getting food, when Israeli tanks and drones began shooting at people on Haroun Al Rasheed Street in the west of Gaza City, in the area of Sheikh Ajleen.

An Israeli official told CNN that IDF troops had fired live fire at people surrounding the aid truck, as “the crowd approached the forces in a way that posed a threat to the troops, who responded to the threat with live fire. The incident is being reviewed.”

The aid trucks tried to escape the area, accidentally ramming others and causing more deaths and injuries, witnesses added to CNN.

Dr. Amjad Eleiwa, from the emergency room at Al Shifa Hospital, told CNN that 40 of the deceased had arrived at the hospital.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya of Kamal Adwan Hospital told CNN that 10 more dead people had arrived at the hospital, while Al Awda Hospital in Jabalya confirmed the arrival of 3 more dead people.

The number of dead and injured is expected to increase, as many bodies and people are still on the streets, and ambulances have difficulty reaching those who need them because debris blocks the way, according to Ahmad Abu Al Foul to CNN.

In response to CNN, the IDF said that “the incident is being reviewed.”

“Early this morning, as humanitarian aid trucks entered northern Gaza, Gaza residents surrounded the trucks and looted the supplies being delivered. During the incident, dozens of Gazans were injured as a result of shoving and trampling,” the IDF told CNN.

Oxfam International has condemned the attack in a post on X, saying it is a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian laws and our humanity.”

The number of dead and injured has been updated to reflect the latest information provided by authorities.
