The 1,000th bariatric surgery has just been performed at the Saint-Jérôme hospital, for the benefit of as many people who wanted to improve their overall health, announces the Laurentian Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSSLAU).
Bariatric surgery is a specialized medical procedure for people with severe obesity. It aims to reduce body weight by altering the digestive system to help patients lose weight sustainably and improve their overall health. Each surgical procedure was performed with the utmost care and expertise, with the aim of improving the health, quality of life and life expectancy of patients.
One of the keys to success lies in the multidisciplinary team made up of surgeons, nutritionists, psychologists and clinical nurses. Among the 1,000 operations carried out since 2017, the surgery team has used the parietal gastrectomy procedure 969 times, which is performed through small incisions to introduce instruments and reduce the volume of the stomach. The possibility of performing certain day surgery procedures has facilitated access to this procedure, despite the health constraints imposed in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
