After the series of attacks on the homeless in Vienna, a reward of 10,000 euros was offered, the police announced on Thursday. According to the Vienna State Police Directorate, the amount is provided by the “Association of Friends of the Vienna Police”. Most recently, on the night of August 9th, a knife attack on a 55-year-old in Vienna-Josefstadt. The man succumbed to his injuries last Sunday.

On July 12, a 56-year-old man was found stabbed to death on a park bench at Handelskai in Vienna-Brigittenau, and more than a week later a 51-year-old woman in Leopoldstadt was seriously injured by stabs and cuts. However, the woman survived. Due to the similar injury patterns, crime periods and the group of victims, the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) assumes that there is a connection between the attacks and the perpetrators.

The work of the investigators is currently particularly challenging, according to the state police department. “So many leads and clues are being followed that the various investigative areas of the LKA Vienna work together across departments.” This includes, among other things, the processing of the information already received, requests and evaluations of video material from public cameras as well as the questioning of people.

In connection with the promised reward, the police once more asked the population for help on Thursday. Information is requested with the assurance of the strictest confidentiality to the Vienna State Criminal Police Office on 01 31310 33800.

In particular, the police asked the population whether people in the following hours of July 12, July 22 and August 9, 2023 in the area of the stairway on the Handelskai, around the Praterstern, in particular in the area of the Venice Au Park and or made suspicious and/or relevant observations in the area of the Hernalser Gurtel. In addition, the criminalists are looking for people to whom the crimes were reported or who might have overheard suspicious or relevant conversations regarding the crimes.

The police also addressed the wanted perpetrators and possible accomplices on Thursday. “A confession or participation in the clarification of the cases can be a significant reason for mitigating the sentence,” said the state police department. In addition, reference was made to the clear-up rate for homicides in Austria, which is 90 percent. “Murder never becomes statute-barred, so the investigation is never closed. Not only is the commission of the murder itself punishable, but also any contribution to it,” said a statement from the executive.
