The expansion of the 5G network has just gained significant momentum in Brazil, with the Anatel authorizing the activation of the network in over 100 municipalities, according to a statement from the Ministry of Communications (MCom) issued on Wednesday (23). Those contemplated include 73 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul and 27 in Santa Catarina.
As of Monday of next week (28), telephony operators that won lots in the 3.5 GHz band in the 2022 auctions will be able to start procedures for licensing and activating 5G stations in the named municipalities. MCom estimates that this expansion will allow 122 million Brazilians residing in 1,812 cities to have access to 5G technology.
However, Anatel warns that the release of the frequency band does not guarantee the immediate installation of 5G networks, as this depends on the individual schedule of each telephone operator.
“The release of the 5G band is one of the first stages of this continuous work that the federal government is developing, from north to south of the country, to bring the fifth generation of mobile data to every Brazilian, to every school and health unit. The commitments of the winning operators in the 5G auction go until 2030, but we continue working to advance this deadline”, said the Minister of Communications, Juscelino Filho.

5G technology operates in the same frequency band used by the TV signal transmitted to traditional satellite dishes, known as Band C.
The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) issues an alert informing that traditional satellite dishes will stop working, making it necessary for users who still do not have digital television and still receive open TV transmissions through these antennas to adapt their equipment. This is to avoid possible interference or interruption in transmission.
