100 days of war between Israel and Hamas: a review of the key moments of the conflict in Gaza
It has been 100 days since the outbreak of Israel’s war in Gaza, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that “no one will stop us” from destroying Hamas, as his country faces accusations of genocide in The Hague.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched an offensive once morest the Palestinian enclave following Hamas militants launched a brutal attack on Israel on October 7, in which gunmen killed around 1,200 people and took more than 200, according to Israeli authorities.
Since the attack, more than 23,843 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.
Here are some of the key moments of the conflict:
October 7, Hamas attack: Hamas’ surprise assault on October 7 was the largest terrorist attack in Israel’s history. At least 1,500 Hamas fighters crossed the border with Israel by land, sea and air using paragliders. Shortly followingward, Netanyahu said Israel was “at war.”
October 9, Israel orders the “total siege” of Gaza: Two days later, Netanyahu said the IDF would attack Hamas with force “like never before,” aiming to destroy the militant group.
October 13, a growing exodus: The Israeli military ordered 1.1 million people in northern Gaza to evacuate their homes immediately, intensifying its response. Since the conflict began, the UN estimates that up to 1.9 million people have been displaced.
October 17, hundreds dead in a Gaza hospital: A deadly explosion devastated Gaza’s Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, which was housing thousands of displaced people. CNN found that the explosion was likely due to a defective rocket fired by Palestinian militants and not an Israeli attack.
October 27, Israel expands its ground offensive: Following a war carried out largely from the air, the IDF announced that it was “expanding ground operations” in Gaza.
November 15, assault on Al-Shifa hospital: Israel launched a “targeted” operation once morest Hamas inside Gaza’s largest hospital, where thousands of Palestinians were believed to be taking refuge. Conditions at the hospital deteriorated rapidly during the days of fighting. The attack sparked international criticism.
November 24, a truce begins: After days of careful negotiations, a truce between Israel and Hamas ended the fighting. As part of the truce, civilian hostages held captive by militants were released, and groups of hostages were released every day.
December 1, the truce is broken: A week later, the Israeli army resumes fighting once morest Hamas in Gaza, accusing the group of breaking the terms of the truce. Israel’s focus began to shift from the north to the south of Gaza.
December 15, hostages killed in botched raid: Israeli soldiers shot and killed three Israeli hostages in northern Gaza following mistakenly identifying them as threats. The IDF stated that the shooting contravened its engagement rules and that the soldiers involved would face disciplinary procedures.
January 1, Israel announces partial withdrawal: On the first day of the new year, Israel announced that it would soon begin withdrawing thousands of soldiers from Gaza to prepare for a new phase of the conflict, although a senior official warned that he expected fighting to continue throughout the year.
January 11, the trial before the International Court of Justice begins: South Africa accuses Israel of genocide in an unprecedented case before the United Nations’ highest court, asking it to order an end to the Israeli military campaign in Gaza. Israel has denied the allegations, calling South Africa’s case “distorted.”
January 11, attacks once morest the Houthis in Yemen: The US and UK militaries have launched strikes once morest Houthi targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, in response to the Iran-backed militant group’s attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
