How Samsung Knox evolves to protect billions of users around the world and how the company is ushering in a new era of device security
Samsung Electronics’ Samsung Knox Security Platform Turns 10! Named following one of the world’s most heavily guarded sites, it was first unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) en 2013.
That means a decade of leading mobile protection for users around the world, during which Samsung Knox has become a comprehensive security platform synonymous with protection for millions of consumers and businesses. And now, Samsung is tackling the next frontier of device security with Knox Matrix.
Improving security in an increasingly connected world
Knox Matrix is Samsung’s vision for a future where connected devices in an ecosystem can protect each other, as well as their users. It’s a comprehensive approach to security that will become increasingly essential as more devices and aspects of our lives become connected.
Many users around the world already own a variety of connected devices, from mobile devices and televisions to refrigerators and robotic vacuum cleaners. The presence of more than 14 billion connected devices in the market demonstrates the vastness of this landscape, which shows no signs of shrinking. Samsung is aware that despite the benefits, increased connectivity has the potential to lead to further exploitation. Traditional security infrastructure that protects individual devices will not be able to keep up, as one compromised device has the potential to affect others within the same ecosystem.
Knox Matrix will address this challenge through a revolutionary concept that will pave the way for the security of multiple devices such as mobile phones, televisions, home appliances, and more.
Samsung devices that have Knox Matrix work together to protect themselves in a trusted network. If an element is compromised, Knox Matrix will isolate it from the ecosystem to protect the others. Having Knox Matrix support across multiple devices can effectively turn a smart home into a smart shield – the more devices a user has connected, the better their overall security.
Today, there are three fundamental features of Knox Matrix that guarantee its success. Trust Chain allows devices to monitor each other for threats. Credential Sync secures user information as data moves between devices; and Cross Platform SDK will enable devices on various operating systems and platforms (including but not limited to Android, Tizen, and Windows) to join the Knox Matrix with consistent security standards. In this way, we can keep devices secure even in a hyper-connected world.
Knox Matrix manages all of this within a private blockchain, allowing compatible devices to monitor each other for violations and ensuring security through intelligent threat monitoring. With these steps and more features to be introduced, users will be able to enjoy various connected devices safely and conveniently.
The road to the next frontier: stronger together
Building the foundation for the next era of device security requires careful consideration. Knox Matrix development is moving forward, but there are challenges on the way to the next frontier. These include reconciling different types of products, with varying operating systems and security standards, into a frictionless system that works as one.
As devices become more connected, Samsung must also make sure they aren’t more complicated to use. With Knox Matrix, we work to offer users transparency and choice along with protection. Users need to be sure they can make as informed decisions as possible regarding their devices, so they can stay protected without the hassle. We anticipate that Knox Matrix will alert users to potentially unsafe situations, such as using old firmware, and offer suggestions for next steps.
The power of Knox Matrix to protect connected ecosystems will be demonstrated in phases, starting with Samsung Galaxy products such as smartphones and tablets. Knox Matrix compatible models will be available from 2024, initially with the three main features mentioned above with more expected to be added via updates. This will expand to cover Samsung home appliances in the next two to three years, followed by partner devices. Support for partner devices is already being developed.
A Trusted Record of Safe Innovations
Samsung already has a long history of enabling different types of devices to work seamlessly together through SmartThings. In line with the philosophy of open collaboration Samsung has also been working closely with trusted industry partners and the broader security community to define and expand security standards, better identifying flaws before they become problems. More eyes, more minds, better solutions. This background serves as the key foundation for all Samsung Galaxy devices, along with end-to-end protection y threat detection in real time incorporated into each layer of their products.
Knox Matrix is just the latest development in Samsung’s innovative history of Knox security. Samsung recently introduced Knox Vaulta key security solution that isolates users’ most sensitive data to ensure it never falls into the wrong hands.
Previous evolutions included TrustZone, which provided a secure environment within the main operating system to run sensitive applications and processes separately from regular software. In this way, work and entertainment might safely coexist on the same device.
Samsung Knox also evolved into Knox Suite[1] to help key businesses and institutions around the world efficiently secure, deploy and manage their fleet of devices with customizable, easy-to-manage software and end-to-end security.
No wonder industry analysts give Samsung Knox top marks and multiple government agencies have awarded Samsung Knox certifications over the past decade. That’s why Samsung is proud to say: Knox is one of the most trusted security platforms in the world thanks to its defense-grade security.
Given this formidable track record, we are confident that Samsung Knox is in the best position to define the next era of device security. Connected technology will help us create better lives and experiences, and more connectivity doesn’t necessarily mean more risk. With Samsung Knox, Samsung is laying the foundation for a more secure tomorrow by being stronger together.
