SV Guntamatic Ried has made a successful start to the title race in the 2nd football league: The favorite earned the opening victory with a mature performance in a 1-0 away win against Stripfing.
Ante Bajic set the tone with a chance shortly after kick-off, but his header hit the crossbar. In contrast to the flood of goals in the 11-0 cup win in Röthis, there was a long period of silence despite good opportunities – and when Nikki Havenaar’s header landed in the net, the referee team found Michael Sollbauer to be in an offside position (13th).
Referee Safak Barmaksiz also saw Simon Furtlehner handball in the penalty area and awarded a penalty. Mark Grosse scored to make it 1-0 (49th minute), but some Ried fans didn’t notice: it was at this point that the smoke in the away fans’ section was at its highest.
Ried could be blamed for not scoring more goals. But there was no need to worry about their opening victory. Admira Wacker found out that things can also go differently: their title rivals lost 0:1 to Kapfenberg.
