2023-05-07 06:42:24

Broadcast this Sunday evening on TF1, the second adventure of the Guardians conceals many secrets. Here is our selection of the most notable.

The timely programming of the second film of Guardians of the Galaxy, while the third installment has just reached cinemas, is also an opportunity to dive back into the backstage of the feature film. As often with James Gunn, the anecdotes are numerous, ranging from laughter to tears, like his films.

Some passages may contain minor spoilers, but nothing major enough to spoil the pleasure of watching this excellent film. And as is the tradition with every production Marveldo not turn off your television during the end credits, where two additional scenes await you.

1 Precious Walkman

Iconic object of Peter Quill, which allows the Guardians to afford an exceptional soundtrack, the precious Walkman posed problems for the production. Indeed, the props man had all the difficulty in the world to obtain a model in good condition, given the age of the player. He went so far as to ask Sony directly to get him one, something the Japanese manufacturer was unable to do. The six versions needed for the shoot were therefore patiently reconstructed by the artist.

2 Youthful Kurt

At the start of the film, Ego, Peter Quill’s celestial father, appears during his youth with the future Star-Lord’s mother. Only here, at the time of the filming of Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2, the star was already 66 years old… It was therefore necessary to combine make-up sequences and the use of digital effects in post-production to rejuvenate Kurt Russel, for an absolutely stunning result. The actor even bragged that he didn’t give the special effects guys too much work. Something to make anti-wrinkle addicts dream!

3 Full-throated Drax

For his role as the muscular character always functioning at the first degree, Dave Bautista had to endure two things that infuriated him. The first: exaggerate his laughter according to the recommendations of James Gunn. Of a less expansive nature, he went so far as to lose his voice. The other major problem was obviously his full makeup, forcing him to long sauna sessions to make it disappear at the end of the day. Not so easy to play the cosmic idiots.

4 A hyper-active brother

James Gunn’s younger brother Sean plays a dual role in the film. Indeed, he provides the “set” part of the scenes of Rocket, dubbed by Bradley Cooper in the original version. But he also embodies Kraglin Obfonteri, Yondu’s faithful servant. This double hat imposed on the actor an astonishing performance, during sequences where the two characters give each other the reply. A real challenge that he was able to take up with the support of his big brother.

5 A Crunchy Groot

The new version of Groot, described by James Gunn himself as the equivalent of the son of the first missing character, finds himself here in the form of a young shoot with the behavior of a rebellious teenager. The whole production was afraid before the release of the film that this new version would displease the nostalgic public of the first Groot. On the contrary, his cute side and his wild dances seduced the spectators and packed the merchandising around the little character.

6 Triple reunions

With so many sizes on display, Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2 was also the occasion of amazing reunions. Indeed, Sylvester Stallone (Stakar Ogord) and Kurt Russell (Ego) were the headliners of the action film Tango & Cash (1989). The other improbable duo formed during these space adventures is that of antagonists, Stallone and Michael Rooker (Yondu), who clashed in the vertiginous Cliffhanger in 1993 – of which a remake is in preparation. Finally, Russel and Rooker had also played together in Tombstonethe same year.

7 starman in the stars

James Gunn loves placing his idols in his films, if only for a very small role. The presence of Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere at Once) in the skin of a devastating clan leader is just one proof among many others. Unfortunately, another star that Gunn would have liked to see in his film couldn’t answer his call, and for good reason. David Bowie was then already suffering from cancer which carried him away on January 10, 2016. His cult songs, such as Starman or Space Odditywould have made a guest of perfect coherence.

8 Nathan Fillion changes skin

Best friends away from the sets, Nathan Fillion and James Gunn try, as soon as the opportunity arises, to use their friendship for collaborations. To integrate him into the cast, the director had the idea of a cameo of his friend in the guise of Wonder Man, a superhero with acting talents. Eventually deleted in the edit, the appearance did not take place, but later allowed Fillion to play the role of Master Karja in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3.

9 Bad memories

The main theme of the feature film revolves around the relationship with the father, the loss of a parent or a loved one and the psychological repercussions they can have. Between two gags, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 does not fail to grab the viewer almost by surprise on an emotional level.

For Chris Pratt, this theme was all the more cathartic since he lost his father in 2014, during the filming of Jurassic World. Not having made his mourning at the time, this filming allowed him to accept in part this tragic disappearance, according to his own confessions.

10 Oversized ego

Before finally setting his sights on Kurt Russell, Gunn hesitated for a long time to find an actor capable of playing the aptly named Ego, imbued with his divine persona. Among the names mentioned, a real constellation of stars such as Bruce Willis, Robert De Niro, Gary Oldman or even Mel Gibson had been considered.

Matthew McConaughey had also been approached, but had to decline the proposal due to filming at the same time of The Dark Tower (2017). Finally, the relative physical proximity of Russell and Pratt gave meaning to the final choice.
