With iOS 17, Apple is modernizing several apps including the Messages app. Here is an overview of the 10 new features of the application.
As part of the new iOS 17 release, Apple has made several changes to its Messages app. There’s a new look, functionality, decals and important new safety features that help people traveling alone feel safer.
Here are 10 new features of the Messages app:
Updated design
Apple has updated the app design to make the user experience easier. The “+” button located on the left of the composition window groups all the applications and tools of Messages. Tapping it brings up a drop-down list of options, including Camera, Photos, Stickers, Cash, Audio, Location, Store, and installed Messages apps.
“Check In”: checkpoint
“Check In” is a security feature you can use while traveling to allow others to track your progress. You can tell a friend or family member where you are going and they will automatically be notified when you reach your destination.
Concretely, your close contact will be notified of your return route. If you stop progressing along the way, Messages will contact you to find out what’s going on. If there is no response, your battery level, precise location, and cellular status will be shared with the person you choose.
When you arrive at your destination, your friend or family member will be notified. The latter announces that you have arrived safely and the “Check In” ends successfully.
Stickers
Stickers have been around in the Messages app for several years, but they haven’t received much attention. Apple is changing this in iOS 17, as all emojis are now considered stickers, in addition to actual stickers.
If you open the Stickers section of the Messages app, you’ll see stickers from apps you’ve downloaded, stickers you’ve created, emojis, and Memoji all together.
Creation of stickers
In iOS 17, you can use auto-clipping to create and save your own stickers. To do this, select one of your photos, hold it down on the subject of the photo to access the “Add Sticker” option.
You also have several effects that you can add to make your digital stickers more realistic. Including a white outline, comic book-style shading, 3D embossed effect, and a shiny, holographic finish.
Reactions with stickers
You can now place the sticker anywhere in an iMessage. Just drag the emoji to the message you want to reply to.
Now it is possible to use stickers wherever emojis can be accessed. Including in third-party apps, images, emails, etc.
Additionally, Apple has added new Memoji stickers with a halo, smirk, and hiding Memoji, complementing the existing static Memoji sticker options.
Catch-up
If you’re falling behind in a conversation with a friend or a group of people, iOS 17 shows you a catch-up arrow. Tapping it will take you directly to the first unread message in the conversation.
Swipe to reply
If you want to reply to a specific message in a chat, just swipe your finger from left to right to bring up the reply interface. It’s a much faster way to respond.
Search enhancements
Apple improved the search function in Messages with iOS 17 by providing an option to combine multiple filters. For example, if you’re looking for images of a certain person, you can type “photos” followed by the person’s name, selecting each search filter to narrow your results.
Transcripts of audio messages
If someone sends you an audio message and you’re in a place where you can’t immediately listen to it, iOS 17 will transcribe it for you so you can read it.
Automatic deletion of verification codes
Many websites and services use verification codes sent via text message for security reasons, and these messages can clutter the Messages app. iOS 17 includes an option that allows you to automatically delete the code that was used for the connection.
You can enable it manually in the settings under Settings > Passwords > Password Options > Automatic Cleanup.
Location sharing
With the “Location” setting in the Messages options, you can share your location or request a friend’s location directly from the Messages app. You can also pin a specific location where you’re going without having to open the Maps app.
With these updates, Apple’s Messages app offers an improved experience, a sleek design, enhanced security features, and better handling of stickers, emojis, and interactions in conversations.
