September is slowly coming to an end and although the weather is still… making us nazis with storms and high temperatures, on the one hand the atmosphere, on the other the evening jacket which -now- needs a little something, and of course the appetite for a nice little movie in the evening regardless of whether it’s a Saturday night with the next day off or not, it’s a lure if the movie is worth it!
So let’s see some suggestions for Autumn nights…
1. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in ‘When Harry Met Sally’ are… kind of enemies who eventually get together as lovers in this all-time classic romantic movie. We go back in time to the fall of 1997 with a road trip of the protagonists from Chicago to New York. On the road, they argue over whether men and women can be platonic friends. Ten years later – in a chance meeting in a bookstore – they will try to answer this question…
2. Little Women (2019)
Before Greta Gerwig’s portrayal of Barbie, there was Jo March, the feisty protagonist of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel Little Women. In this adaptation of Gerwig, we are greeted by a beautiful autumnal New England and the March sisters. Gerwig doesn’t forget to add her own social commentary and romance to the classic story, with great results and a warm heart.
3. Crossing Delancey (1998)
Fall in New York has something special, according to Billie Holiday. Nothing captures it as beautifully as Joan Micklin Silver’s Crossing Delancey. The story of this film follows the footsteps of Isabelle Grossman, a New Yorker, who works in a bookstore and is looking for a brighter life, only her Jewish grandmother wants her to marry and be rehabilitated. Eventually, they set her up with the owner of a pickle shop. She doesn’t really like him, but after getting to know him better, a romance begins. A sweet and warm story about family, love and what you finally find where you least expect it.
4. If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)
Speed does not represent this beautiful romantic novel by James Baldwin, which was brought to the screen in 2018 by Barry Jenkins. Jenkins delivered a story with his own style and grace, bringing this harrowing story to life. Kiki Layne and Stephan James play Tish and Fonny, a young couple in 70s Harlem who are in love and want to start a family. Terrifying obstacles arise when Fonny is wrongfully accused of a crime he did not commit. Jenkins’ film ‘captures’ the trauma of discrimination and prejudice and how to overcome it through love, against the backdrop of autumn Harlem.
5. Practical Magic (1998)
Two sister witches with a curse that… haunts them as a family, search for true love while avoiding a detective. A spine-chilling romance set in the picturesque canvas of New England.
6. Knives Out (2019)
Mystery that takes place with an autumn background. A dysfunctional family gathers for a party. The detective investigates a murder. Surprise is an element of the film as well as its actors, what is hidden behind the characters of the family and what is the killer’s motive for the crime under investigation?
7. Good Will Hunting (1997)
A genius foreman discovers his potential. He is dealing with legal problems and undergoing psychotherapy. It is a touching story with a talented cast, which teaches us some things about life itself and – ultimately – some things that define us in it and we cannot hide or avoid them…
8. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
What happens when a group of friends go to an isolated cabin and find terror around every corner? This film subverts classic horror clichés and delivers a fresh, atmospheric experience. You can never be sure of some things when night falls…
9. «You’ve Got Mail» (1998)
Tom Cruise and Meg Ryan star in one of the most classic romantic comedies of the 1990s. The film, directed and written by Nora Ephron, takes the viewer through all the seasons but the evolution of the relationship between Joe Fox and Kathleen Kelly ” it lights up” more in autumn. This is helped by the catchphrase: “Don’t you just love New York in the fall?”.
10. «Sweet November» (2001)
After a November spent with Sarah (Charlize Theron), Nelson (Keanu Reeves) rediscovers happiness. However, when Sarah’s bitter and melancholy truth comes to light, he will try to bring happiness back into her life.
So, which one will you start with tonight?
