Once once more, Instagram wants to compete with TikTok and YouTube. Do you often post educational videos or tutorials? The application is testing the possibility of increasing the duration of Reels internally…
Reels from 3 to 10 minutes on Instagram
The feature was spotted by Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer known for finding early versions of upcoming updates to apps.
Instagram Reels are those short videos that were introduced 3 years ago, with a duration of only 15 seconds. Right now, their maximum length on Instagram is 3 minutes, but that’s significantly less than what TikTok offers. TikTok users can indeed post content for 10 minutes, while paying users can post content for up to 20 minutes!
But according to screenshots shared by Paluzzi, Instagram is working internally to extend the time limit on Reels to 10 minutes.
Instagram was originally created as a photo-focused app. But with the growing popularity of competing platforms like TikTok, it has started to offer new content sharing options to users.
Indeed, TikTok currently allows users to share videos up to 10 minutes long. But unlike TikTok, Instagram is unlikely to introduce a paid version for creators who want to take advantage of the ability to create long Reels from within the app.
Instagram is transforming into a more targeted video sharing platform
This change serves a dual purpose: not only does it place Reels in direct competition with TikTok, but it also positions it as a competitor to YouTube.
While Instagram and TikTok compete for a share of the long-form video market, YouTube takes a different approach. YouTube has focused on strengthening its presence in the short-form video space, introducing a range of authoring tools and a music discovery stream similar to TikTok.
The traditional distinctions between these social networks are changing. Instagram, once primarily known as a photo-sharing platform, TikTok, famous for its short videos, and YouTube, known for its longer videos, are all transforming into more targeted video-sharing platforms.
What would be the impact of longer Reels on Instagram in digital marketing?
The ability to post longer video content on more social platforms might lead to increased visibility and engagement for brands.

Meanwhile, Instagram is testing a new group mention feature that will allow users to tag multiple people in a story using a single mention.
In a post on his broadcast channel, Instagram manager Adam Mosseri said:
“We’re testing a way to tag a group of people in a story using a single mention. Once you’ve created a group mention, it can be reused by anyone in the group to automatically tag everyone in all new stories.”
This feature will be useful, as tagging multiple people in a single mention will make Stories cleaner and less cluttered, providing a better viewing experience for subscribers (with IANS contributions).
Ultimately, with over 2 billion monthly active users, Instagram Reels play an important role in content generation. Even the media and large media organizations use Reels to share information and connect with larger audiences. In this context, the potential introduction of 10-minute videos would probably be a feature highly anticipated by content creators.
