Gotthard Tunnel closed in both directions
Driving through the Gotthard tunnel today required a lot of patience. 10 kilometers of traffic jams had already formed on both sides of the tunnel in the morning. It doesn’t get any better in the evening either: for technical reasons, the Gotthard is closed in both directions.
Day trippers to the south and the approaching holiday return traffic led to long traffic jams on both sides of the Gotthard road tunnel on Saturday. Already in the morning the columns of vehicles grew to a length of at least ten kilometers. Waiting time: two hours. In the evening, the traffic jam on the south side was eleven kilometers.
This was reported by the Ticino police and the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) in the short message service Twitter. The situation did not improve in the evening either: For technical reasons, the Gotthard road tunnel had to be closed in both directions, as TCS reported on Twitter shortly before 8 p.m.
In addition to the usual traffic jams caused by day-trippers heading south, the wave of return journeys has now started. In the canton of Aargau, the school holidays come to an end on Monday in the first Swiss canton. School will also start again next week in the most populous German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
