What is happiness? How can we define it? How do we achieve that? These are some of the questions people think regarding when it comes to reflecting on what they want in life and how to get it. Sometimes, for some, there is no answer. However, there is a way of finding the path that leads us towards it: habits.
Arthur C. Brooks, a social scientist and professor at Harvard University, tried to answer these questions in his book Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier happy, in Spanish) in collaboration with Oprah Winfrey.
Although it describes that happiness is not a total state but a process, it also emphasizes that there are some things that happy people do to have emotional well-being, which makes them fuller. Which is?
1. Enjoy life
Brooks told the Ten Percent Happiest with Dan Harris podcast that exists a happiness diet, and just like exercise, it must be constant to maintain it. The first is learning to enjoy the details, beyond just being happy.
Enjoying the little details in life can make a big difference.
That is, life goes slower and more harmoniously when you read a book, meditate or even listen to music.
2. Satisfaction
“As human beings, we need to fight, we need to strive, we need to sacrifice, we even need pain in our lives because that’s actually how we get something,” Brooks explained.
What that means is that if there are no goals to meet, or a list to tick off, there will be no satisfaction following all.
What he recommends is to look for what makes you appreciate what you have earned with effort: Cooking? Making art? Travel?
3. Have a purpose
Along with the previous point, this habit of remembering what we live for and why we wake up every day wanting to smile and give it our all is the difference in finding a purpose in life. For the sociologist, this is the most important and complicated point to resolve throughout life, but not impossible.
