In the ongoing Olympics in Paris, 10,500 athletes from 206 countries around the world will try hard for 329 gold, 329 silver and 350 bronze medals in 32 different sports (bronze medals are divided from gold and bronze medals). There are more because in some sports, apart from the third, the fourth placers also get a bronze medal).
While there are many countries including Bangladesh, Myanmar and Congo that have not won any medals despite their population of millions, or countries like India and Pakistan where the number of medals per population is 40 million and 250 million respectively, there are many such countries in the world. There are athletes who have won not just one or two, but tens of medals.
Leading them is American swimmer Michael Phelps, who has won a total of 28 medals, including 23 gold medals. Apart from Pakistan, which has a total of only three gold medals, the rich countries of the sport like Argentina, Austria, Czech Republic have won less medals than Michael Phelps alone.
Second on the list of most medal winners is former Soviet Union and recent Russian gymnast Larisa Latinina, who single-handedly won nine gold, five silver and four bronze medals.
In third place is Norwegian ski champion Mariet Bjorgen, with a total of 15 medals.
A question also arises here that in a game like hockey there are 11 players who have to play at the group level first, then if they are lucky enough to qualify for the semi finals then they get a place in the finals and if they win the finals then go somewhere else. You get a gold medal.

But in a competition like swimming, more than a hundred medals will be distributed. They are such that a total of 37 swimming events will be held at the Paris Olympics, of which 18 will be men’s, 18 women’s, and one mixed event.
This means that an exceptional swimmer can win 19 gold medals alone.
Why so many competitions for the same game? Since only one style i.e. freestyle has competitions of 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m, that means there are 18 medals in that alone.
It’s just one type of swimming. Apart from this, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, medley, relay and marathon are separate.
Talking about gymnastics, 18 different competitions will be held tomorrow, in which as many gold medals can be won.
