A recent drone strike blamed on Ukraine caused a fire at an oil refinery in southern Russia, Krasnodar regional authorities said early Sunday, adding one person died of a suspected heart attack.
“The fire in the area of the Slavyansk Oil Refinery has now been completely extinguished. According to preliminary information, one person died during the drone strike, the cause of death was initially thought to be a heart attack,” the Krasnodar region operational headquarters said on Telegram.
“There were no casualties as a direct result of the fire, nor was there any threat to settlements,” he said.
Roman Sinyagovsky, head of the Slavyansk Municipal District, said on Telegram one factory worker was injured and blamed the attack on Ukraine.
The Slavyansk-on-Kuban oil refinery is located in the Krasnodar region, east of the Sea of Azov.
Drone attacks on oil refineries and energy sites in Russia increased this week ahead of a presidential election that is guaranteed to confirm President Vladimir Putin’s tough rule.

A fire broke out at an oil refinery in Samara, regarding 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, following a drone strike on Saturday.
An oil refinery was also the target of a drone attack in Ryazan on Wednesday, causing casualties, while another oil refinery was targeted outside the city of Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.
Two people were killed in a drone strike in the Russian city of Belgorod on Saturday.
