1. FC Union Berlin in ecstasy after beating Ajax Amsterdam: “When the dream comes true”

In the end, hardly anyone wanted to leave the red party in the Alte Försterei. 21,700 euphoric fans sang, applauded and celebrated the team, which immortalized itself on Thursday evening with a 3-1 (2-0) win over Ajax Amsterdam with another chapter in the Union fairy tale book.

The motto of the impressive Berlin choreography during the encounter: “When the dream comes true, life becomes intoxication.” A state that you as a fan of the third-placed Bundesliga player can hardly escape from in the past few weeks. “What you experience here is unbelievable,” enthused an incredulous captain Rani Khedira following the second leg of the Europa League playoffs at the Alte Försterei.

Even before the kick-off, the fans of 1. FC Union set off emotional fireworks. “When you came out here to warm up, you might already feel it,” said the 29-year-old from Stuttgart “RTL”. For more than 90 minutes, the supporters pushed on their team, who tirelessly worked down the 1995 Champions League winners.

Although the Berliners gave the ball to the Dutch almost 75 percent of the time, they won 56 percent of the duels and repeatedly put pinpricks forward with their quick switching moments. “Of course we’re overjoyed, even if the 90 minutes were very exhausting,” said Robin Knoche, who gave the hosts the lead following 20 minutes with a hand penalty: “But it was definitely worth it.”

Knoche: “Simply unbelievable”

And how: For the first time in the club’s history, the capital club is in the round of 16 of the Europa League. “It’s just unbelievable. It’s extraordinary. Nobody would have thought that before the season,” admitted Knoche “RTL”.

But the dream becomes reality: The Irons are continuously establishing themselves as the absolute top team in Germany. “We are developing bit by bit. Everyone can do their part. It’s just fun,” explained Knoche. Fun and togetherness as a recipe for success.

There seem to be no limits in Köpenick at the moment – and there is certainly no end to the wave of success: In the Bundesliga they are tied with Bayern and BVB at the top of the table, in the DFB Cup the team of coach Urs Fischer will play at Eintracht Frankfurt in April for the semi-finals.

“It really doesn’t get any better,” said the 57-year-old Swiss, who was chanted by the fans following the 3-1 win once morest Ajax.

“I’m not only proud of the team. We can all be proud of ourselves,” said Fischer, referring above all to the 21,700 spectators. The Unioners are hard to beat, especially in front of their home crowd. “It wouldn’t have been possible without your support,” Knoche thanked the spectators following the game.

They only suffered one defeat of the season in Berlin: on the first day of the Europa League once morest the Belgian representative Royale Union Saint Gilloise. The importance of the triumph once morest Ajax became all the more clear when Captain Khedira said on Thursday evening: “The stadium hasn’t experienced that before.”

Three days before the top game once morest the record champions in the Allianz Arena, the wave of euphoria is almost spilling over in Köpenick. In the frenzy of reaching the round of 16, the fans roared the classic: “Take off Bayern’s lederhosen.”

Goalscorer Knoche didn’t lean too far out of the window, just wanted to “see what’s possible at the weekend.” But everything seems feasible for 1. FC Union Berlin these days. Because: Fairy tales come true in Köpenick.
