On February 8, the People’s Court of An Giang province held a first-instance trial and sentenced defendant Try Sophea (50 years old, living in Cambodia) to five years in prison for illegally transporting goods across the border.
At the same time, the court also announced the expulsion of Try Sophea from the territory of Vietnam following serving the sentence.
According to the indictment, around 13:30 on June 22, 2022, Lemon Somaly (living in Preah Bat Chan Chum commune, Kirivong district, Takeo province, Kingdom of Cambodia) asked Try Sophea (sister-in-law) to bring 4 white plastic bags and 1 black plastic bag inside contains many rings, yellow necklaces from Cambodia to Chau Doc city for sale.

Try Sophea drove a motorbike to Tinh Bien international border gate area, then left the car on the Cambodian side and then walked to Barie gate area 1 to do immigration procedures but did not declare the amount of gold brought at the customs area. .
When going to Barie Gate No. 2, the Task Force of Tinh Bien International Border Gate Border Guard Station discovered Try Sophea and checked the bag with 11 black plastic bags inside containing many rings and yellow necklaces.
At the same time, the functional forces also discovered that the left and right jacket pockets of Try Sophea had 4 white plastic bags containing many earrings and rings. The total weight of gold is nearly 1kg and nearly 0.5kg of silver with a total value of more than 865 million VND.
As for Chanh Somaly, the investigative police agency of An Giang Provincial Police has asked the Cambodian side for mutual legal assistance, but there has been no result, so the police will investigate and handle it later.
