South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reports that the number of confirmed measles cases has surpassed 900.
Since the outbreak began in October 2022, 905 measles cases have been reported in the following provinces
- Limpopo (362 cases)
- Mpumalanga (107 cases)
- North West (213 cases)
- Gauteng (156 cases)
- Freestate (30 Fälle)
- Western Cape (12)
- KwaZulu-Natal (18)
- North Cape (7)
Measles cases have been reported in all but the eastern provinces of South Africa. In provinces where an outbreak has been reported, the most affected age groups are still 5-9 year olds (43%), with a significant proportion of cases in age groups 1-4 (24%) and 10- 14 is reported (19%). The population is urged to vaccinate their children once morest measles.
The measles strain detected in Limpopo Province and North West Province is of genotype D8, similar to the strain in Zimbabwe at the 2022 outbreak.
