Giant tridacne,
giant clam. Classification Kingdom Animalia Phylum Mollusca Class Bivalvia Subclass Heterodonta Order Veneroida Family Tridacnidae Genus Tridacna Binomial name (In taxonomy (botany, zoology, etc.), the binomial name, or binomial, comes from the…) Tridacna gigas
(Linnaeus, 1758) IUCN conservation statute:
VU A2cd: Vulnerable
The giant clam or giant clam (Tridacna gigas) is the largest bivalve mollusc. This edible species is protected because it is in danger of extinction (Generally speaking, the word extinction designates an action consisting of turn off something…).
Origin
Red Sea (The Red Sea (Arabic: ????? ?????? Bahr el-Ahmar) is an intracontinental sea of the ocean…) and ocean (An ocean is often defined, in geography, like a vast expanse of water…) Indo-Pacific
Behavior
When young, the animal secretes a byssus, a tuft of filaments which passes through the opening of the shell and through which it attaches to the seabed, with the hinge pointing downwards. As the colony grows, corals, sponges and algae cover or surround it, hiding it under their mass (The term mass is used to designate two sizes attached to one…), leaving no excess than the edge. The slightly separated valves reveal the brilliantly colored mantle in green (Green is a complementary color corresponding to light which has a wavelength…), in red (The color red has different definitions, depending on the chromatic system which we do…), or in blue (Blue (from the old High German “blao” = brilliant) is one of the three colors…). The edges of this mantle are bristling with protuberances enclosing the hyaline organs, a sort of lens which concentrates the light in the depths of the tissues and promotes there by photosynthesis (Photosynthesis (Greek φῶς phĹŤs, light and…), the multiplication (Multiplication is one of the four operations of elementary arithmetic…) of microscopic algae. Absorbed by white blood cells, these algae would constitute the main food of the mollusk, whose digestive tract is greatly reduced in adults. Between the lobes of the mantle open two tubes, the inhaling and exhaling siphons through which a current of water enters and exits putting the pallial cavity in communication (Communication concerns both man (intra-psychic, interpersonal communication, etc.) with the surrounding environment.
Biotope
Shallow coral reef bottoms from 50cm to 15 meters
Special feature
It is the largest shell in the world: its shell can measure 1.5 m and weigh 250 kg. It does not have a concentric design (scale).
Reproduction
The majority of species are simultaneous hermaphrodites, they become male and can reproduce between 2 and 6 years of age; then subsequently when they have reached their adult size, they can produce oocytes. Their reproduction takes place in two stages: first the male gametes are released into open water, then second come the oocytes. Fertilization gives birth to a larva which will lead a planktonic life (Life is the name given:) to settle down following a certain time (Time is a concept developed by human beings to understand…) on a support where it will evolve in bivalve.
