False guaiac (Acacia spirorbis) is a tree endemic to New Caledonia (New Caledonia is an archipelago in Oceania located in the Pacific Ocean…). However, it is also present on the east coast of Australia (Australia (officially Commonwealth of Australia) is a country of…).

Description

False guaiac is a shrub, sometimes a tree that can reach 10 m high. The trunk (A trunk can be:) is short and often twisted. Its diameter (In a circle or a sphere, the diameter is a line segment passing through the center…) rarely exceeds 40 cm. The branches are numerous.

The bark, approximately 1.5 cm thick, is brown, hard, widely cracked.

The foliage, fine and olive green, is made up of oblong phyllodes (not leaves) 6 cm to 12 cm long and 0.5 cm to 1.5 cm wide, curved at the end.

The yellow flowers are grouped on inflorescences in spikes of approximately 5 cm, axillary to the young leaves.

The fruits are pods rolled into a circle or semi-circle. They contain a few brown, flat seeds measuring 2 × 3 mm.

Two subspecies are recognized:

  • Acacia spirorbis subsp. solandri (Benth.)Pedley (identified on the Australian east coast) [1]
  • Acacia spirorbis subsp. spirorbis Benth. [2]

Uses

Its wood is beige-brown, a little orange or brown. It is hard and resistant to decay agents. It is used for stakes and firewood.

False guaiac, due to its great adaptability, has been used successfully to rehabilitate mining lands along with ironwood (Iron is a chemical element, with the symbol Fe and atomic number 26. It is the…) (Casuarina collina). It also serves as a host plant parasitized by sandalwood (Santalum austrocaledonicum).

Distribution

This species (In the life sciences, the species (from the Latin species, “type”…) is very widespread over the whole of the New -Caledonia, on all types of soil, with a preference for the alluvium of ultamafic lands.

It is a gregarious species, often growing in pure stands, common in sclerophyll formations and abundant in mining scrub, thickets and savannahs in Niaoulis.

It is resistant to fires which are particularly frequent in these formations. These fires, moreover, help its propagation: the germination of the seeds would be stimulated by the heat (In common language, the words heat and temperature often have an equivalent meaning:…).
