Image illustration Pixabay Some people have probably experienced it: drinking alcohol increases the possibility of approaching people you find attractive. Until now, from a scientific (A scientist is a person who is dedicated to the study of a science or sciences and who…), this phenomenon was thought to be explained by the fact that the alcohol level tended to make us perceive other people as more attractive, but a recent study reveals quite another explanation. Researchers from the Stanford Prevention Research Center in Palo Alto, Calif., recently worked alongside the University of Pittsburgh to further research this topic. And it turns out no, blood alcohol content doesn’t have the ability to make us perceive other people as more attractive than if we were sober. In reality, it simply increases our self-confidence, and therefore acts on the probability (Probability (from the Latin probabilitas) is an assessment of the likelihood of a…) that we dare to approach the people we find attractive, and interact with them.
The study involved 18 young pairs of male friends who rated the attractiveness of people in photos and videos. These young men have been told that they may have the opportunity to interact with one of these people in a future experience. They were asked to select the ones they would be most likely to interact with. Two groups were then compared: one having consumed alcohol (within the legal limit for driving in the United States, i.e. 0.08% blood alcohol level), and the other having consumed non-alcoholic beverages.
The researchers brought the young men together in the lab to mimic the interactions they would have had in a real-life situation. Result: When they had consumed alcohol, men were 1.71 times more likely to choose a person among the most attractive to potentially meet in a future study.
In summary, alcohol boosts self-confidence, and therefore the likelihood of approaching people that we would not have dared to approach in a state of sobriety. However, it is important to remember that while alcohol may have these attractive effects in the short term, it undoubtedly has much more harmful effects in the long term.
