A team of researchers from Rice University in the US has received $45 million in funding to develop smart implant technology that might cut cancer deaths in half. This breakthrough might revolutionize the way we treat difficult-to-treat cancers.

The initiative, called THOR for “Targeted Hybrid Oncotherapeutic Regulation,” is led by Omid Veiseh, a bioengineer at Rice University. The implant developed, named HAMMR for “Hybrid Advanced Molecular Manufacturing Regulator”, adjusts the dose of immunotherapy in real time. treatment which consists of administering substances which will…) of the patient (In the field of medicine, the term patient commonly refers to a person receiving…).

“Instead of tying patients to hospital beds and IV bags, we will use a minimally invasive procedure to implant a small device that continuously monitors their cancer,” said Omid Veiseh.

Dr. Amir Jazaeri, professor of gynecologic oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, points out that current diagnostic tools provide a very limited view of how cancer progresses. THOR might be a game-changer by providing real-time data on the environment (The environment is everything around us). It is all the natural and…) tumoral elements.

“We believe that THOR might transform the status quo by providing real-time data of the tumor environment,” added Dr. Amir Jazaeri.

The HAMMR implant would operate in a closed loop, a strategy already used for the management of diabetes (Diabetes has several forms, all of which have abundant urine in common…). It would communicate wirelessly, potentially with a smartphone, to adjust drug doses in real time.

The THOR team is made up of specialists from various sectors, including synthetic biology, materials sciences, immunology (A material is a matter of natural or artificial origin that man shapes for… Immunology is the branch of biology which deals with the study of the system…), oncology, electrical engineering and artificial intelligence (Artificial intelligence or cognitive computing is the “search for means …). Their technology would be applicable to a wide range of peritoneal cancers affecting the pancreas, the liver, lungs and other organs.

The first clinical trials will focus on the effectiveness of the implant for recurrent ovarian cancer. The team hopes to begin human trials within the next five years.
