???? Pig kidney transplant on a human: it works!

2023-08-19 06:00:05

For the first time, a genetically modified pig kidney has been transplanted into a human and is still functioning more than a month later. This success gives hope to patients in the face of organ shortages.

The scientific community is very interested in xenografts. Faced with the ever increasing number of patients awaiting transplants, the idea would be to use animal organs instead of wait for a human gift. The choice of the pig in this research is not due to chance (In ordinary language, the word chance is used to express a lack of efficiency, otherwise…): because of its many morphological similarities with humans (A man is an adult male individual of the species called Modern Man (Homo…), his organs can theoretically be functional in the body of a human. Several similar tests have already been carried out. pig heart on a man at the beginning of 2022, the latter having survived two months following the transplant. With regard more specifically to pig kidneys, the first transplant on a human dates back to the end of 2021, and the second (Second is the feminine of the ‘second adjective, which comes immediately following the first or which…) current 2022. The kidneys were rejected during these experiments, but new biotechnologies have more recently allowed scientists to improve on the modification of the genome (The genome is all the genetic material of an individual or a pig, thus making it possible to greatly reduce the risk of hyperacute rejection.

Usually, a rejection is noticed between 10 to 14 days following such a transplant. But the latest transplant has been a resounding success. Indeed, a pig kidney transplant took place on a brain-dead 57-year-old man who donated his body to science (Science (Latin scientia, “knowledge”) is, according to the dictionary…), in the hospital (A hospital is a place intended to take care of people with…) NYU Langone of New York (New York, in English New York City (officially, City of New York ) to distinguish it from…). 32 days later, the French team from Inserm, an expert in the field, was asked to assess the immune response: no rejection was observed! The doctors had also transplanted the thymus of the pig on this same patient (In the field of medicine, the term patient usually designates a person receiving…), so that this gland helps the cells of the patient to consider those of the pig as being his own and thus avoid rejection.

Faced with the number of patients waiting for organ donation throughout the world (The word world can designate:), the result of this trial is encouraging. On French territory alone (The notion of territory has taken on increasing importance in geography and particularly in…), nearly 12,000 patients remain awaiting kidney transplants, when less than 4,000 are actually transplanted each year (A year is a unit of time expressing the duration between two occurrences of a related event…). However, before being able to carry out this type of intervention in France, it would be necessary to modify the laws of bioethics (Bioethics is a part of ethics which appeared, as…) in force to date (The day or the day is the interval between sunrise and sunset; it is…).
