Incorporating music into math lessons boosts children’s performance, according to an analysis of nearly 50 years of research on the subject.

Music is said to make math more enjoyable and keep students engaged, helping to alleviate their fear or anxiety (Anxiety is for Biological Phenomenological Psychiatry and…), details an article in Educational Studies. Various techniques can be used to integrate music into math lessons, ranging from clapping to different rhythms for learning (Learning is the acquisition of skills, i.e. the process… ) numbers and fractions, to using math to design musical instruments. Dr. Ayça Akın, from Antalya Belek University, reviewed research published between 1975 and 2022 to clarify the impact of teaching (Teaching (from Latin “insignis”, remarkable, marked with a sign, distinguished ) is a…) musical regarding learning math. It combined the results of 55 studies conducted around the world (The word world can refer to:), involving nearly 78,000 young people from kindergarten to university.
Three types of music interventions were included in the analysis: standardized music interventions (classical music lessons), instrumental music interventions (lessons where children learn to play an instrument), and integrated music-math interventions, where music is integrated into math lessons.
The students took math tests before and following the intervention. Their progress was compared to that of pupils not concerned by an intervention. Music use (Use is the act of making use of something.) of music, whether in separate lessons or integrated into math lessons, was associated with greater improvement in math skills.
The integrated lessons had the most effect: regarding 73% of the students who received these lessons performed better than those who did not receive the musical intervention.
Arithmetic, in particular, seems to be taught particularly well through music. Fundamental concepts, such as fractions and ratios, are also essential to music. Integrated lessons allow students to build connections between math and music, providing more opportunities to explore and understand math.
Dr. Akın concludes that music instruction has a small to moderate effect on math performance, but integrated lessons have a major impact.
The limitations of this analysis include the relatively small number of studies available. It was not possible to consider the impact of factors such as gender, socio-economic status or duration of instruction (An instruction is a form of communicated information that is both a command and a. ..) musical.
