In Albania, a team of archaeologists has just discovered the oldest lakeside city in Europe! This village on stilts would date from several thousand years before our era, which makes it the oldest discovery to date on our continent (The word continent comes from the Latin continere to “hold together”, or continens…).
A Neolithic lake city
It is in the waters of the oldest lake in Europe (Europe is a land region that can be considered a…), Lake Ohrid, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and formed there more than one million (One million (1,000,000) is the natural integer that follows nine hundred and ninety-nine…) years between Albania and North Macedonia (North is a cardinal point, opposite to the south.), that archaeologists have recently discovered this village (A village is, in the countryside or in the mountains, a set of dwellings, of…). This site would be several hundred years older than those hitherto known in the Mediterranean and in the Alpine region. Since its discovery, divers and archaeologists have taken turns plunging to the bottom of this lake to bring up ever more fascinating elements. Among the discoveries, bones of both wild and domestic animals were found, as well as different types of seeds and plants, but also ceramics and flint tools and other defensive structures.
In addition, various fossilized fragments as well as pieces of wooden piles have been identified. No less than 100,000 stakes would have been driven into the bottom of the lake, to build this city which was probably fortified, even if we still do not know to this day from whom its inhabitants sought to protect themselves. These tools had been made with oak (Oak is the vernacular name of many species of trees and shrubs belonging to…), which is a godsend because this tree (A tree is a terrestrial plant capable of developing by itself in height, in…) turns out to be very precise for dating. The first datings, carried out using carbon 14 analyzes (Carbon 14 is a radioactive isotope of carbon, noted 14C.), reveal that the age of these objects would be between 6000 and 5800 BC.
According to the first estimates, the city thus discovered might have been populated by 200 to 500 inhabitants who would therefore have settled down. The manufacture of this village on stilts was a complex task, it remains to understand why they had chosen this type of architecture (Architecture can be defined as the art of building buildings.). The excavations will still continue for probably several years in view of the diameter (In a circle or a sphere, the diameter is a line segment passing through the center…) of this lake. Historians hope that the elements thus collected and analyzed will help to lift the veil on questions relating to these lakeside villages as well as on life (Life is the name given:) in the Neolithic in a more general way.
