Broadcaster Jaejae has transformed from an office worker to a freelancer and is meeting listeners as a radio DJ. offer| MBC▶ Click here to enlarge
Jaejae, a celebrity (celebrity + non-celebrity) who is called ‘Yoo Jae-seok in the new media world’, is now starting a new challenge beyond YouTube. Amid favorable reviews from listeners, ‘Jddi’ (DJ’s nickname) is cruising as a ‘Date at 2 o’clock’ DJ.
Jaejae recently met with Maeil Business Daily Star Today at the Sangam MBC office building in Mapo-gu, Seoul, and expressed his impression of transforming from an SBS office worker to a ‘daughter of MBC’.
Jaejae said, “Many people were interested in the news of leaving the company. Nothing much has changed yet. Resignation is nothing special. These days, I don’t think it’s anything special, but I think people were interested in me because I’m known through the media. “It’s just that work has been divided into SBS and MBC,” he said. It’s not that I took my hands off the ‘Civilization Express’. What I have been doing and what I have been doing is the same. I hope that interest will lead to ‘Date at 2 o’clock’ and the ‘Civilization Express’ that will continue in the future,” he said calmly.
Jaejae went straight to MBC for the first time on the 29th of last month, the day following leaving SBS. He successfully completed his first DJ debut with MBC FM4U’s ‘Date at Two O’Clock’ (‘Date at Two O’Clock’).
‘Date at 2 o’clock’ is a radio program with a symbolic meaning in MBC. In 1973, Kim Ki-duk, a former MBC announcer, started the program under the name ‘FM Studio’, then changed the name only once to ‘Date at 2 o’clock’ in 1975, and has maintained the program for 50 years. It is MBC FM4U’s flagship program hosted by outstanding singers and broadcasters such as Kim Ki-duk, Joo Byung-jin, Lee Moon-se, Yoon Do-hyun, Yoon Jong-shin, Park Myung-soo, Park Kyung-lim, and Ji Seok-jin.
Jaejae said, “It’s definitely a new environment, so I’m adapting. From the first day, I received congratulatory comments from seniors such as Bae Cheol-soo, Yoo Jae-seok, and Kim Gu-ra, and said, ‘This is a warm place. I thought, ‘Welcome. She is happy and grateful,” she said.
Jaejae’s radio DJ challenge was not even thought of by fans. This is because the encounter between Jaejae, the icon of ‘new media’, and radio, which is loved as a traditional communication channel, is unfamiliar. Jaejae trembled, saying, “I didn’t expect it either.”
“I didn’t even have a dream that I didn’t feel like. I was an office worker. I had vaguely thought that I would get a job at a company and live as a salary earner. I have been exposed to the media with the title of ‘lover’, and have been exposed to various media while planning and appearing in ‘Civilization Express’. While I was a radio guest, I had delusions of ‘what if I became a DJ?’ haha. As if I was earning a living in a field I was unfamiliar with, new media, I only thought that I should be grateful for the DJ offer. Radio is sincere and charming. It seemed like a place where I might find some leisure in the modern world.”
Why did PD Hong Hee-joo choose Jae-jae as the DJ when he newly organized ‘Date at 2 o’clock’? Jaejae said, “She said that she contacted me because she was thinking of me,” she looked back at Hong PD’s proposal. At the same time, he said, “I think I probably wanted to breathe new life into the program. Due to the nature of radio, there are many DJs who are warm and benevolent,” he said, referring to his charm with a different texture from other DJs.
Jaejae did not hide his affection for the production team. Jaejae said, “The production team has a passion for the program, as well as affection for the DJ and deep consideration for the listeners. He seems to really like the radio. It also motivates me to work harder,” he said. I’m afraid to meet new colleagues, but they are good enough to make my worries go unnoticed. Thanks to that, I was able to draw a blueprint for the future with the thought of ‘I need to do it for 10 years’”, dreaming of a long-term project.
Jaejae has already discovered the charm of radio while he has been in charge of DJ for less than a month. Jaejae said, “What I felt when I appeared as a regular guest on SBS Love FM’s ‘Narsha’s Abracadabra’ is that radio is a media enjoyed by all ages. I thought I might reach a lot of people, and it seems to be happening that way. Just looking at the text messages from listeners, there were many people who did not know me, and there were many people who got to know me through the radio.”
“This is an era where old media and new media cannot be defined. Radio programs are also using YouTube very well. They are making new attempts through short-form content and visible radio. Isn’t it up to you to make it?”, revealing his determination to create a new radio.

Existing radio was conducted by sitting in a studio and talking together regarding the stories sent by listeners or talking with guests. ‘Dude’ wasn’t much different either. However, Jaejae runs out of the radio studio every day and meets listeners in person, ‘Challenge Cheonmyeong! Jaejae goes!’ Through the corner, it broke the frame of the existing radio.
Jaejae said, “I go down to the first floor of MBC through the daily corner and meet the listeners in person. Since he does radio, he said he would sit in the studio and proceed. He didn’t expect to do a corner like this, but it’s fresh. When I listened to it once more, it was realistic and fun,” he said.
I wonder if there are many things to worry regarding as much as leaving the studio. Regarding this, Jaejae said, “The broadcasting equipment is simpler than I thought. Technology has advanced a lot. As if going out for a drink, as if going out to meet a friend. The elevator is also fast, so no worries.” He continued, “Even if I can’t go to the studio during the commercial break, I’m enjoying it because it’s the real pleasure of live broadcasting.”
In addition, regarding the ‘Dude Salty Room’ corner, which analyzes listeners’ consumption habits every Monday, Jaejae said, “Anyway, the corner with the most listener participation was fun. You participated a lot. It’s fun,” he recommended.
The listener’s nickname for ‘Date at 2 o’clock’ was decided as ‘Doo-shik’. Jaejae said, “Sunhee Jung said, ‘There are many angry people at 2:00.’ I thought that I should have a strong nickname,” he said. It looks strong and has a youthful feel. I like it,” he said.
“I can see why DJs are like friends. It seems like a platform where you can talk like friends. Dusik told me the details of daily life honestly. It feels like being among lively people. Doo-sik is gaining energy from the people,” he said, immersed in the charm of the radio.
Jaejae has been making a trend through ‘Civilization Express’. He led the trend, from Breath Listening Myeong (masterpiece to listen to while hiding) to Come Noonmyeong (masterpiece that will close your eyes even if you make a comeback). In 2020, as a Chuseok special, the ‘Breath Listening Concert’ was organized by SBS. It was unprecedented for a YouTube channel to go into broadcast programming.
Jaejae, who has led the trend of the MZ generation, seems to have a goal or a dream since he is the DJ. What is Jay’s goal? Jaejae said, “Actually, I’m not the type to live with a set goal,” but expressed his great aspirations, saying, “Shouldn’t we take a shot at number one in the listening rate?”
“Wouldn’t the fragments be big only when the dream is big? I wonder if it should be ranked first in listener ratings. As if there is no undisputed first place, I want to win first place while helping each other and coexisting. I want to work hard as a DJ in a subtle and permeating way. I will try not to become a part of the program.”
Jaejae also said, “The previous DJs were the leading stars of the time. There is a responsibility for that. I have a determination to do my best. I will do my best so that listeners do not feel a sense of difference. Communicate like friends and try to have a close bond. I will make a comfortable broadcast,” he promised.
Even before leaving the company, Jaejae worked as an MC for various events. As an entertainer, he has many events such as movie, drama, and entertainment broadcast program production presentations and singer showcases. Jaejae is receiving favorable reviews for his tension-filled yet neat progress, and is attracting attention following Park Kyung-rim and Park Seul-gi. As Jaejae goes free, more expectations are raised for his performance as a host.
Jaejae said, “I think I was able to stand in the chair of the event because there were seniors who made the road first. They created the role of a professional host of events such as production presentations and showcases. It’s not a professional job, so I can’t dare compare it,” he said humbly. He continued, “There was a time when senior Park Kyung-rim was in charge of the production presentation of the teabing entertainment program ‘Girls’ High School Curiosity’, and he was so good at it that I respected him. I saw and learned a lot. He had a different understanding of the program, so he commented without even looking at the cue card. I realized the importance of communication as well as the host of the event.”
Broadcaster Hotstar Jaejae has yet to sign a contract with a management company. Jaejae said, “I’m doing well by myself,” and added, “It’s not that I don’t intend to go anywhere, but it hasn’t been long since I came out, and there aren’t too many things I can handle alone.
If it becomes difficult to do it alone, you can enter a place where your will suits you.”
Jaejae finally appealed to himself as a ‘freelancer’.
“I’ve been working for a long time, so I know how the office workers and the people I work with work are, and I have a sense of reality. Because I lived on a paycheck, I also know the value of a paycheck. There is also the diligence of ‘work as much as you get’. (Chang) Doyeon Her older sister said that freelancers are beings that can go anywhere. She hasn’t decided anything regarding her future following leaving the company. She will go anywhere if you call her, if she will.”
