Meeting with President Zelensky… Call for opening of Mariupol safety passages
Russia launches missile attack on Kiiu city following Guterres-Zelensky talks
(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Seung-wook = While visiting Ukraine, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres criticized the UN Security Council for failing to do its best to prevent the war.
According to the AFP news agency, Guterres made this statement at a joint press conference following meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiiu, the capital of Ukraine on the 28th (local time).
“The Security Council has failed to do everything in its power to prevent and end this war,” Guterres said.
“I want the world to know that it sees you, hears you and respects you for your determination and resilience,” he said to the people of Ukraine.
“I know that words of solidarity alone are not enough,” he added.
He also urged the creation of a safe passageway to evacuate civilians from the port city of Mariupol in southern Ukraine.
Mariupol is a key point linking Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014 by force, with the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, which is occupied by pro-Russian separatist rebels.
Since Russia has made Mariupol its top target from the beginning of the war and has been besieging it for nearly two months, Mariupol is mentioned as the city with the most serious humanitarian crisis.
“Mariupol is in a ‘crisis in a crisis’ situation,” Guterres said.
During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the 26th, he said that Russia had also agreed to the participation of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross in the evacuation of civilians from the Azoustal Works in Mariupol.
Prior to his meeting with President Zelensky on the same day, he visited Buchawa Borodianka, suspected of being the site of the massacre of civilians by Russian forces.
He urged the Russian government to cooperate with the investigation of war crimes, saying “in the 21st century, war is both absurd and evil.”
But Russia fired missiles at the city of Kiiu shortly following the meeting between Guterres and Zelensky.
Kiiu Mayor Vitali Klicichko said via social media that two shots were fired in the Shewchenkowski area.
“Through this heinous atrocity, Russia has once once more demonstrated its attitude towards Ukraine, Europe and the world,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleva said.
An official from Guterres’s side confirmed to reporters that there was nothing wrong with the president’s safety.
Rescue officials said the bombing of Kiiu, which took place less than an hour following Guterres and Zelensky’s press conference, killed at least one and injured several people, including those trapped in two collapsed buildings, Associated Press said, citing rescue workers. year said
