(LONDON = Yonhap News) Correspondent Choi Yun-jeong = A journalist who protested once morest the invasion of Ukraine during a news broadcast on Russian state TV appeared in court amid the world’s attention.

Russian state-run Channel 1 TV editor Maria Ovshanikova, 44, appeared in court on the 15th (local time) in a black suit and a necklace with the color of the Ukrainian flag, The Times reported.

Obshanikova was detained the day before on charges of unlawfully protesting while suddenly appearing behind the host during a news broadcast watched by millions the day before and holding a piece of paper with anti-war messages in Russian and English.

Obshanikova was arrested shortly following the protests and has not been contacted by lawyers for 12 hours, so concerns regarding his safety have rapidly spread.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on the same day that French President Emmanuel Macron “will start diplomatic efforts to protect it through embassy protection or asylum.” .

Obshanikova is now charged with up to 15 days in prison, but might face up to 15 years in prison if the law punishes spreading “fake news” regarding the Russian military, lawyers said.

After the protests in Ovshanikova, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russian opposition figures, and Western countries praised it as an act of courage, but Russian Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed it as a ‘hooligan’. Channel 1 said it was under internal investigation.

Obshanikova, a mother of two, recently broke up with her husband, the head of Russia Today (RT) TV, Russian media reported.

According to a blog run by a former BBC Russian service reporter, Ovshanikova mainly talked regarding children, dogs and the house, and never discussed politics.
