(Seoul = Yonhap News) The Russian military conducted a simulation exercise to attack a virtual enemy with a nuclear warhead missile in Kaliningrad, a territory off the Baltic Sea, AFP news agency reported on the 4th (local time).
Russia has recently warned that it will deploy nuclear weapons in the Baltic Sea as a defense measure in response to Sweden and Finland’s move to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced on the same day that the Russian military conducted a simulation exercise of firing a mobile Iskander ballistic missile equipped with a nuclear warhead in Kaliningrad.
This is the 70th day after Russia’s blitzkrieg invasion of Ukraine.
Kaliningrad, where the training took place, is a Russian offshore territory located on the Baltic Sea coast between Poland and Lithuania.
Although it is not clear whether Russia has officially deployed nuclear weapons in Kaliningrad, there is a nuclear weapons storage facility there, and since 2018 an Iskander capable of carrying both tactical and conventional warheads has been deployed.
Here, the Russian military conducted a simulated missile strike exercise against a virtual enemy missile launch pad and airfield, protected infrastructure, military equipment, and military command post.
It is known that after the simulated firing in which more than 100 troops were mobilized, a maneuver training was followed to move the firing position to avoid the enemy’s retaliatory strike from the origin.
