(Seoul = Yonhap News) Taiwanese media such as China Times reported on the 2nd that it was confirmed that the Taiwanese military dispatched a specialized strike force to Jinmen Island and the Matsu Islands in response to the invasion of Chinese drones.
According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense, these specialized strike squads were dispatched equipped with drones and jamming guns, and the number of dispatched military personnel was regarding a dozen.
Recently, Chinese drones have been frequently appearing on Jinmen Island and neighboring islands, and the response intensity of the Taiwanese military is increasing.
The Taiwanese military said on the 1st that at noon on the 1st, an unidentified civilian drone entered the controlled waters near Sui Island attached to Jinmen Island. Jinmen Island is only 3.2 km away from Xiamen City, Fujian Province, China.
Earlier on the 31st of last month, the Taiwanese military also fired live ammunition defensive fire when three Chinese civilian drones flew one following another to an island near Jinmen from 6 to 8 pm.
The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of China, the agency in charge of the Chinese government’s Taiwan-related affairs, has strongly criticized the shooting down of a Chinese drone by the Taiwanese military.
Zhou Fenglian, spokesman for the Taiwan Office of the People’s Republic of China, said at a press conference on the 1st that “the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan is deliberately propagating the incident to incite tension,” claiming it was “foolish behavior.”
However, the Taiwanese government countered that this was an appropriate action.
Taiwan’s Chief Executive (Prime Minister) Su Zhen-Chang (Prime Minister) said on the 2nd that he had sent a warning to “do not invade” in relation to the shooting down of a Chinese drone by the Taiwanese military, but nevertheless, “I had no choice but to shoot for self-defense because I ignored the warning. It was the most appropriate response following restraint and warning.”
He added that China should be restrained.
