[헤럴드경제=신동윤 기자] Chinese scientists have come up with the idea of installing an observation system to prevent an asteroid impact on the moon, where exploration and development work is in full swing, and can prevent an asteroid impact that might lead to human extinction in advance.
According to the Hong Kong media South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 23rd, Chinese lunar exploration project general designer Wu Weiren (吳偉仁) launched three satellites into lunar orbit to monitor the movement of asteroids approaching Earth’s orbit at an early stage. He claimed to be able to build a ‘defense system’.
In particular, by constructing two optical telescopes at the moon’s south and north poles, he came up with the idea of being able to grasp the movement of asteroids that cannot be observed by the asteroid early warning network operating on Earth.
China, which succeeded in bringing Earth to the Earth for the first time in 44 years since 1976, announced that it plans to set up an observatory at the lunar Antarctica in 2030.
According to a paper published in ‘Scientia Sinica Information’, a peer-reviewed journal in the Chinese science sector, the research team of Wu Weiren said that if an asteroid defense system of this type is established, “It will be possible to intercept asteroids flying from all directions with rockets, etc.” “It will be possible to form a defensive circle at a distance of 800,000 km in diameter, regarding twice the distance between the Moon and the Earth,” he said.
Wu Weiren argued that the system for observing asteroids on Earth had obvious limitations. Although not at the level of human extinction, regarding 60% of asteroids large enough to completely destroy a nation have gone untracked.
“If we install telescopes at the south and north poles of the moon and launch artificial satellites in lunar orbit to observe the movement of asteroids, we will be able to accurately observe the movements of the asteroids, which might not be seen due to the strong sunlight.”

Behind the argument made by Wu Weiren and his research team lies the pride of China’s space technology level. In addition, China’s military-security benefits can also be obtained through the project.
“The launch of many rockets into lunar orbit, as well as attempts to land on the moon, will be a good place to test China’s latest surveillance, tracking, and intercept technology,” the research team said. “It will improve China’s ability to protect space assets that are likely to be created.”
Meanwhile, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Director Bill Nelson said earlier this month he was concerned regarding the possibility of China taking over the moon alone.
