[리얼푸드] ‘Localization and sophistication’ China’s ramen market trend

[리얼푸드=육성연 기자] The Chinese instant ramen market is showing slow growth. Japanese ramen giant Nissin Foods said its sales in the second quarter of 2023 fell 5.5% compared to the same period last year due to slow growth in China’s instant ramen market. Nissin analyzed that the market share of instant ramen is gradually shrinking as the delivery economy, ready-to-eat meals, and meal kits become popular.

According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation (aT), ramen products that promote localization and high quality have recently been receiving attention in China. According to a survey conducted by market research firm Nielsen IQ, as China’s instant food categories have become more diverse, differences in sales performance have emerged by type. In particular, ramen, which is a product of a representative regional food, has grown significantly. In the case of ‘Luosifen’, it grew by 28.9% in the first half of the year compared to the previous year. Over the past three years, Luosifen’s store openings and sales have continued to increase, and its popularity has expanded throughout China.

Additionally, Ah Quan Food’s ‘Hongyu Noodles’ series has established itself as a new instant noodle category by taking advantage of Sichuan’s local preference for spicy food. The characteristic feature of this product is that the noodles are not fried and can be consumed immediately following soaking in hot water for a few minutes. The product is receiving positive response from consumers as it shows differences from traditional instant ramen in terms of texture, flavor, and shape. According to Aquan Foods’ public data, cumulative sales of the Hongyumyeonpi series in 2021 exceeded 200 million units.

The ramen industry, which judged that the general instant ramen market was almost saturated, chose a premium strategy. In the case of Kang’s Fu, the product is ramen, but it has launched ‘Express Soda Noodles’, which uses a self-heating cooking method like hot pot, and is selling them for 20 yuan (regarding 3,600 won) each.
