Now, in the south coast of Gyeongsangnam-do, it is rain and wind, but the storm surge that ‘Hinnamno’ can bring is also of great interest.
There is concern that the nightmare of tsunami damage caused by Typhoon Maemi in 2003 will not be repeated.
Reporter Lee Seung-eun reports.

A 10m high wave from a typhoon hits the beachfront apartment.
Even the waterfront bulkheads are useless.
This is a storm surge that occurred during Typhoon Chaba in 2016.
Maemi in 2003 was recorded as the strongest typhoon with a maximum speed of 60 m/s.
The tsunami that reached a maximum of 4m and 39cm also increased the damage.
In Masan, people in an underground karaoke room a kilometer from the sea died.
Typhoons are large cyclones, and the lower the central pressure, the stronger the force.
As a typhoon approaches the sea, the pressure of the air that presses the sea decreases.
Therefore, in the typhoon-affected area, the sea level rises more than usual.
In addition, strong winds from typhoons lift the waves up to 10m.
The two elements overlap to create a ‘storm tsunami’.
In this situation, when the high tide and high tide times overlap, the tsunami will be higher.

If a typhoon comes at low tide, it is unlikely to be a tsunami.
However, it can prevent river water from draining into the sea, increasing flood damage to the city center around the river.
During typhoon ‘Chaba’, the Ulsan Taehwa River overflowed and devastated the surrounding area.

It is recommended that coastal residents be prepared for a power outage, plan an evacuation area ahead of time in case of an emergency.
