Along with the rainy season, strong winds are blowing across the country. In the midst of untimely tropical nights due to high humidity and temperature, even supertropical nights have occurred in Gangneung.

Because of these circumstances, it is even said that it is a strange rainy season, so let’s take a look at the recent weather conditions with Ban Ki-seong, head of the K-Weather Center. are you with me hello.

Usually, when it comes to the rainy season, we worry regarding rain damage, but looking at the recent situation, we are worried regarding heavy rain, heat waves, and even strong winds. Anomalous circumstances are happening together, why is the weather like that?

[반기성]

I’d say it’s been pretty unusual lately. Currently, a strong wind advisory is in effect for the east and south coast regions, but until this morning, a very strong wind with an instantaneous wind speed of 20m blew in the mountainous and coastal regions. Even tomorrow, where the rainy season front is most affected, there will be many places where there will be strong winds with an instantaneous wind speed of 15 m/s.

The standard for which we issue a typhoon advisory is when wind speeds of 14 m/s or higher on land or instantaneous wind speeds of 20 m/s or more are expected. In mountainous areas, it is issued when the wind speed exceeds 17 m or the instantaneous wind speed is expected to exceed 25 m/s. So, the strong winds that have been blowing in the last few days can be said to be very strong winds of typhoon-class winds.

You talked regarding the current strong wind, but there are photos of the damage caused by the strong wind that viewers recently reported to YTN. I will look at the pictures and explain. Please post a photo.

If you look at the screen you see now, there were places where trees fell down and hit the road, and power lines were cut off by strong winds, causing power outages in some places. As a result, road traffic lights are turned off and electricity supply is cut off in the Hahoe Complex, causing inconvenience to business.

Let’s look at the next picture. Yesterday, another accident occurred in which a man in his 50s while windsurfing lost his life in a strong wind. The picture you see now is a tree that has fallen due to a strong wind. As you can see, the strong winds caused damage in several places.

Looking at the wind now, when Typhoon Chantu made its way north to Jeju Island in September last year, the instantaneous wind speed was regarding 25 m/s. How long will these typhoon-like strong winds last?

[반기성]

Currently, a very warm high pressure is located in the north-central region to the south.

The cold and dry high pressure is located to the north, and the rainy season front is now formed in the middle. So, because of this, strong winds blow, but it seems that the wind will continue to blow strongly until the morning of July 1st in the central region as there is a very strong temperature gradient created by the difference in wind between the north and the south.

Therefore, for the time being, it is necessary to evacuate the facility for safety. From the followingnoon of July 1st. So, the day following tomorrow. As the North Pacific high pressure moves slightly northward and pushes the rainy season front toward North Korea, the winds in South Korea weaken. Therefore, strong winds are expected to start to weaken from the followingnoon of July 1 in the morning.

Strong winds are expected for two days.

Let’s talk regarding tropical nights. The tropical night has come very quickly this summer. How do you see why the tropical night started so quickly?

[반기성]

First of all, the reason the tropical nights occurred so quickly this year is because the exceptionally hot and humid North Pacific high pressure moved rapidly north in June.

We usually call the day when the minimum temperature is 25 degrees or higher from 6:00 PM to 9:00 AM the next day, but in the case of Seoul, a tropical night occurred in June for the first time in meteorological observation history. Then, for two days from the 27th to the 28th, a tropical night over 25 degrees occurred in Seoul. And in Gangneung, Jeju Island, and Pohang, tropical nights continue for four days a year. Most of the inland regions are almost 27-28 degrees Celsius, breaking all-time record lows.

[앵커]

Usually, there were many situations where tropical nights appeared in July and August when it was very hot, but this year it appeared during the rainy season. Can this tropical night phenomenon continue to occur?

[반기성]

The tropical nights of Seoul had never appeared in June. This is because of the pressure layout. At the end of June, the North Pacific high pressure is located near Japan and Jeju, and the rainy season begins in Korea. Therefore, since the North Pacific high pressure is not yet fully affected, the morning minimum temperature does not appear high and tropical nights do not occur often.

However, in this year’s case, the high pressure in the North Pacific has been expanding rapidly. On the 23rd of last week, following the rainy season spread to the central region, the rainy season front went up to Manchuria and North Korea over the weekend. As the North Pacific high pressure expanded into Korea, very hot and humid air flowed in through the southwest wind. Because of the influence of low clouds to the west, radiative cooling failed in the morning, resulting in an unusual tropical night phenomenon. We expect these phenomena to continue to become stronger and faster in the future.

Recently, we pointed out the unusual weather conditions.

So far, I have worked with Ban Ki-seong, the head of K-Weather Center.

Thank you.
