[국제]Iranian women found dead during ‘hijab protests’

Women who took part in anti-hijab protests in Iran have been found dead one following another.

According to the BBC, 17-year-old Nika Shakarami, a 17-year-old woman, disappeared following participating in anti-hijab protests in Tehran, Iran, on the 20th of last month.

Ten days later, she was found dead in a morgue run by Iranian authorities.

Iranian authorities claimed that Nika died in a fall from a construction site, but her family said she was abducted by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards and questioned for a week before being imprisoned.

The family also said the funeral was planned for Nika’s birthday on the 2nd of this month, but the government took her body and buried it 40 kilometers from Tehran.

16-year-old Sarina Esmailzade also died following taking part in protests in Alborz province on the 23rd of last month.

Amnesty International pointed out that security forces struck her in the head with batons, and that her family was also severely harassed and forced to remain silent.

However, Iranian authorities claimed that Esmailzade also committed suicide by jumping off the roof of a five-story building, and that she had a mental illness.

The Guardian said that as suspicions surrounding their deaths were actively shared, they became a symbol of protests, like Mahsa Amini, who died in detention on the 16th of last month for not wearing the hijab properly.
