Prior to the NATO summit to be held in Madrid, Spain on the 29th, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced the plan to expand the NATO response force.

[옌스 스톨텐베르그 / NATO 사무총장 : 우리는 나토 대응군을 변모시킬 것입니다. 고도로 준비된 병력을 30만 명 이상으로 늘릴 것입니다.]

The plan is to increase NATO’s troop resources for emergency situations by nearly eight times from the current 40,000.

NATO has been deploying additional troops in Eastern Europe since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

Secretary-General Stoltenberg also said that defense spending is needed, and that defense spending by European allies and Canada will increase for the eighth year in a row this year.

Nine out of 30 NATO member states have met NATO’s goal of increasing defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product, and 19 said they will reach that goal by 2024.

In particular, he said that at this NATO summit, a new strategic concept will be adopted to suit the new security realities following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

It will identify Russia as the most significant and direct threat to NATO’s security, and will also address China’s challenge for the first time.

[옌스 스톨텐베르그 / NATO 사무총장 : 정상회의에서 중국을 처음으로 다룰 것입니다. 우리의 안보와 이익, 가치에 대한 중국의 도전이 논의됩니다.]

It also said that responses to growing Russian and Chinese influence in its southern neighbors will be discussed.

Secretary-General Stoltenberg welcomed the leaders of South Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand to the summit for the first time, saying that it will deepen cooperation with its closest partners.
