I heard the answer to this question from Go Yun-seong, a pro from Cheongdam Popia, who is appearing on various golf channels such as SBS GOLF.
Q: I am a beginner in ‘3 months driving range’ golf. I am constantly practicing and taking lessons. But still no progress in swing.
For some reason, the golf club on the driving range doesn’t seem right for me, and people around me say, “You have to buy your own.” Some people say, “Even if you give me a driver, I can’t hit it anyway. Iron alone is enough” and “If you make the wrong choice when you are a beginner, it will cost you money later.”
When should I buy a golf club? What are the things to check before buying and what to check even following going to the shop? The golf clubs are all there, but I’m curious as to why the price difference is so big.
A: If you’re interested in golf and need to keep going, it’s a good idea to buy golf clubs as early as possible. Most practice clubs are in poor condition and have limitations in making good shots. In the long run, it is better to tame your own club from the beginning than to get used to the practice club.
Unless you are a low handicap golfer or professional player, we recommend that you purchase the club as a set of one brand. When composing with different brands, you need to set the clubs so that they have the same shaft strength and a certain loft difference, which is unnecessary for beginners. For example, if you have a set of irons, we recommend that you make the driver, wood, and utility the same brand. The opposite is also true.
There is no need to start with a heavy and strong club just because you are strong. For female golfers, it is recommended to select the weakest shaft or just above it, and for males, it is recommended to select the best-selling specification. Recently, they are focusing on fashion and choosing heavy and difficult clubs, which is one of the biggest factors that make golf difficult to start.
We recommend buying new if possible, but used club sets are fine as long as they haven’t been around for too long. Most of them are similar, but even when purchasing offline, it is recommended to find two or more stores and compare prices before purchasing. Since the price is not necessarily a good thing just because it is expensive, it is better to ask them to show you the most comfortable club for beginners.
If you buy from a shop, there will be no problem with parallel products, but when purchasing online, you must check whether A/S is possible. Wood-type clubs such as drivers, woods, and utility clubs, unlike irons, have a hollow head structure, so there is a possibility of breakage.
Lastly, there is a reason for the price difference in golf clubs, as well as the brand value, but there is a big difference in technology in the shaft or head. Introductory If you are a beginner, these skills do not work much, so expensive equipment is unnecessary.
