[경제]Intense competition to secure ‘white oil’ lithium… Formation of ‘K-Battery One Team’

[앵커]

Regarding secondary batteries, which are essential for electric vehicles, the US and Europe are introducing systems to reduce their dependence on Chinese products.

The government and the battery industry plan to establish a ‘one team’ to secure key minerals such as lithium, which is called white oil, to become the world’s No. 1 battery by 2030.

Ombre Muerto Salt Lake is located at an altitude of 4,000 m in the Andes Mountains in northwestern Argentina.

In this place where it is not easy to breathe, a plant of POSCO Holdings was built to extract lithium.

A technology to extract more than 90% of battery raw materials from used secondary batteries has also been developed in Korea.

Korea also actively jumped into the global competition to secure lithium, which is called white oil.

A technology that saves more than 85% of electricity consumed in the process of charging and discharging secondary batteries has also been developed, and the battery industry is strengthening its competitiveness abroad.

However, the US government’s policy to subsidize electric vehicles only when US-made batteries are used is posing a crisis to our battery industry.

This is because China’s dependence on battery raw materials exceeds 80%.

To overcome the crisis, the government and businesses have established the ‘K-Battery One Team’.

So far, each company has signed a supply contract, but from now on, battery-related companies and the government will proceed from mineral excavation to smelting and supply.

The government plans to raise the world’s second largest secondary battery market share at 25.8% to 40% by 2030 through the secondary battery industry innovation strategy.
