(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Dong-hwan = President Yoon Seok-yeol announced on the 2nd that he would actively promote the 2023 Asian Football Federation (AFC) Asian Cup.

President Yoon said this at a dinner with former Korean national football team coach Guus Hiddink, Korean Football Association President Chung Mong-gyu, and Gangwon FC CEO Lee Young-pyo, before watching the friendly match between Korea and Brazil on the evening of the same day, the presidential office reported in a written briefing.

When Chairman Chung and CEO Lee proposed, “Let’s hold the 2023 Asian Cup, which China abandoned,” President Yoon instructed Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Park Bo-gyun, who was present, “to actively promote it.”

CEO Lee said, “Korea has not won or held a championship in 60 years following winning the first Asian Cup in 1956 and the 2nd Asian Cup in 1960. I hope to win this year,” he said.
