“Close cooperation with NATO allies… Korea will fulfill its greater role and responsibility”
(Madrid = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Jun-seo = President Yoon Seok-yeol said on the 29th (local time), “In order to lead North Korea to the path of denuclearization, we must clearly show that the international community’s will for denuclearization is stronger than the reckless will to develop nuclear and missile programs.” said.
President Yoon delivered such a speech at the ‘North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Allies and Partners Summit’ held in Madrid, Spain on the followingnoon of the same day, a presidential office official said at a briefing. He also urged the continued cooperation and support of the leaders of NATO allies and partners. The speech lasted 3 to 4 minutes.
This is the first time he has spoken on the NATO stage as a South Korean leader.
President Yoon, who came to the podium for the seventh time following British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, said, “North Korea’s nuclear and missile program clearly violates UN Security Council resolutions.”
NATO’s so-called ‘new strategic concept’ was also mentioned.
President Yoon said, “Today, the international community is facing complex security threats that cannot be resolved by a single country.
“The Republic of Korea and NATO have developed security cooperation in the political and military fields since they established a global partnership in 2006,” he said.
In particular, he mentioned economic security and cybersecurity, and added, “I look forward to close cooperation with NATO allies.”
President Yoon pointed out that as if considering the Ukraine crisis, “Amid the formation of a new competition and conflict, there is a movement that denies the universal values we have maintained.”
President Yoon concluded his speech by saying, “Freedom and peace are guaranteed by solidarity with the international community.”
U.S. President Joe Biden was the eighth speaker to speak following Yoon.
