Joanna recalled that when she first experienced this symptom, it was during the daytime in 2017, when she found herself feeling extremely tired. Many times in the days that followed she found herself waking up in unfamiliar places, such as in a club at night or at the wheel of a car.

In October 2021, Joanna was finally diagnosed with “idiopathic hypersomnia”. This rare condition causes patients to experience extreme daytime sleepiness, often with difficulty waking up and feeling “restless” and “tranced”.

This out-of-control situation troubled Joanna,

Once I’m trained, I won’t be woken up. When I woke up, I didn’t know what day of the week it was, and I didn’t know how long I was training. Honestly, this disease has ruined my life, and I’m like a sleeping beauty in real life.

Joanna recalled that she could sleep up to 22 hours a day, and she also tried not waking up for four days and four nights in a row. She now mainly eats protein shakes and instant food, because these are easier to digest and absorb, in order to cope with the situation that she does not know when she will fall asleep. In addition, due to the inability to stay awake, Joanna was forced to quit her job in 2019.
