Scientists have developed a virus-killing plastic that might make it harder for bugs, including the new coronavirus, to spread in hospitals and nursing homes.
The team from Queen’s University Belfast in the UK say their plastic film is cheap and can be made into protective gear such as aprons.
She works by reacting with light, releasing chemicals that break down the virus.
Studies have shown that she can kill millions of viruses, even those stubborn species that linger on clothes and surfaces.

The research was accelerated as part of the UK’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Research has shown that the new coronavirus can survive on some surfaces for up to 72 hours, but that’s nothing compared to tougher species. Norovirus – known as the winter vomit bug, can survive outside the body for two weeks while waiting for a new infection.
The team of chemists and virologists investigated self-sanitizing materials that might reduce the risk of spreading infection from contaminated surfaces.
“The film might replace many single-use plastic films used in the medical industry because of the added value of self-sterilizing at no real additional cost,” the university said.
The material was tested in the laboratory once morest four types of viruses, two influenza, 2019-nCoV and picornavirus, the latter of which has characteristics that make the virus highly stable in vitro.

Under controlled laboratory conditions, regarding 1 million viral particles are placed on self-sterilizing plastic. This is far more than the amount of virus needed to start an infection.
“She went from 1 million viruses to zero, and we might see the effect in less than 1 hour, the maximum death in 2 hours, but we’re adding an excess of viruses to really challenge the system, probably in It’s effective within the first few minutes,” said Dr Conor Bamford, from Queen’s University School of Medicine.
