Can’t resist the urge to eat sweets? Researchers have just found a solution that seems to be effective! The result of their study shows that it is enough to watch immersive videos, in which we can see other people consuming candy, to see our own gluttony decrease.

To carry out their study, scientists from NTU University (Singapore) subjected 317 volunteers aged 21 to 28 to immersive video viewing (The video brings together all the techniques, technology, allowing recording as well as the…) through virtual reality headsets (Virtual reality is an immersive, visual, interactive computer simulation,…). This technology (The word technology has two meanings in fact:) allows the participant to feel active and not just a passive observer. In return, they had the opportunity to snack on the famous chocolate-covered peanuts that we all know.
Two groups were distinguished: the first group was subjected to viewing a video 30 times for a total duration of 8 minutes (Primary form of a document: Law: one minute is the original of an act. ..), suggesting the consumption of sweets. The second group was subjected to repeated viewing of a part that was inserted into a washing machine. Result: people who watched a video several times in which a person eating candy appeared consumed a third less candy than people who watched a completely different video repeatedly.
The researchers believe that watching such videos repeatedly leads the participant to imagine eating the candy themselves. This consumption, however fictitious it may be, would therefore have the effect of inducing satiety and thus reducing the desire to consume more.

In a second experiment, the researchers wanted to study the impact of smell in the immersive experience. They therefore repeated the previous experiment, this time associating it with a smell of chocolate. The rate of candy consumption by participants was further reduced by an additional 11%. Thus, smelling the smell of chocolate seems to have an habituation effect (Addiction or tolerance is a process of adaptation of the body to a stimulus…), in the same way as looking at people in consume.
The results of this study might prove useful for people affected by compulsive eating behaviors. It remains to be seen whether similar results might be seen with other types of odors, and whether watching videos more regularly would have a greater effect or not.
