The paths of science are sometimes impenetrable, they say. As proof, bimatoprost, a drug used to relieve ocular hypertension and to give fuller eyelashes, is now helping to open new horizons in the understanding and treatment of obesity (Obesity is the state of a person, or an animal, suffering from hypertrophy of…). A new step forward in this direction (SENS (Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence) is a scientific project which aims…) has just been made by a team led by Cristoforo Silvestriprofessor at the Faculty of Medicine (Medicine (from the Latin medicus, “which heals”) is the science and…) of Laval University (Laval University is one of the largest universities in Canada. She has like…).

Bimatoprost, marketed as Lumigan, was approved in the United States in 2001 for the treatment of ocular hypertension, a common problem in people with glaucoma. loss…). One of the side effects of this medication is that it induces a reduction the size of the fat pads that surround the eyeball.

It was this side effect that, more than 10 years ago, aroused Professor Silvestri’s interest in bimatoprost and its natural analogue produced by the body, prostaglandin F2α ethanolamide (PGF2αEA). A recent study which he has just published in the Journal of Lipid Research with Besma Boubertakh, Olivier Courtemanche, David Marsolais and Vincenzo Di Marzo describes the mode of action of these molecules on certain cells of adipose tissue (Adipose tissue (fat mass)).

“Bimatoprost and PGF2αEA have an effect on the precursor cells of adipose tissue, the preadipocytes,” explains doctoral student in molecular medicine and first author of the study, Besma Boubertakh. The preadipocytes transform into adipose cells (adipocytes) as “They store lipids. However, adipocytes have a limited storage capacity. Excessive accumulation of lipids can cause their death and trigger an inflammatory response in the body, a problem often associated with obesity.”

Experiments carried out by Professor Silvestri’s team on cell cultures showed that bimatoprost and PGF2αEA inhibit the differentiation of preadipocytes into adipocytes (a process called adipogenesis) and promote the multiplication of preadipocytes. In other words, they would stimulate the growth in number (The notion of number in linguistics is covered in the article “Number…) of preadipocytes and they would prevent the growth in size of adipocytes.

The inhibitory action of bimatoprost and PGF2αEA on adipogenesis suggests, in the medium term, a new way of treating obesity, believes Besma Boubertakh. “We believe that bimatoprost is a potential candidate to treat obesity because it would promote healthier fat storage in the body,” she summarizes.
