We knew that a good sleep was useful to improve our concentration and our memory. Researchers recently conducted a study that complements this claim, stating that diffusing perfume in the bedroom might also be very beneficial!

Previous research had already demonstrated that the integration of scents into the environment might stimulate the plasticity of neurons in animals. A more recent research (Scientific research designates in the first place all the actions undertaken with a view to…) more recent, carried out on humans, confirms these initial results.

As part of their study, researchers from the Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (Broadly speaking, memory is the storage of information. It is also remembering…) of the he University of California (The University of California is an American university, founded in 1868, of which…) conducted an experiment on 43 men and women aged 60 to 85, and not presenting with a memory disorder. Different essential oils were given (In information technology (IT), a datum is an elementary description, often…) to the participants: they were asked to diffuse them alternately, each evening before bedtime, for 6 months (The month (From lat. mensis “month”, and formerly in plural “menses”) is a period of time…).

In comparison to other participants who were provided with much lower aromatic concentrations, tests were performed on the participants following this period to compare their memory, attention, planning (La planning is the programming of actions and operations to be carried out) and verbal learning. The result was impressive: participants who perfumed their room every evening showed a 226% increase in their cognitive performance! In addition, functional MRI images (In mathematics, the term functional refers to certain functions….) revealed better integrity of the left uncinate fascicle (which plays (The cheek is the part of the face that covers the cavity mouth, closed by the…) a crucial role in learning and memory).

Scientists already knew regarding the direct link between smell and memory, but did not expect such a result. This study opens up the possibility of implementing simple, accessible and non-invasive techniques to boost memory and prevent dementia (dementia (from the Latin demens) is an acquired reduction in cognitive abilities…). It remains to extend this research to a population already presenting mental or neurological disorders in order to see if this method might be considered as a palliative.
