Vanilla, a 28-year-old chimpanzee, has spent her entire life in captivity, never seeing the sky. A major change happened for her recently at a chimpanzee sanctuary in Florida, where she got to see the sky for the first time.

Vanilla lived part of her youth in a biomedical research center in New York (New York, in English New York City (officially, City of New York) to distinguish her from…). She was locked up there with other chimpanzees in suspended cages, reminiscent of those of birds. Vanilla was transferred from New York to an animal sanctuary in California, the Wildlife Waystation, which closed in 2019. In this sanctuary, she was placed in an enclosure with a roof (The roof is the structure covering the upper part of a a building, allowing…), isolated from the outside world (The word world can designate:).
Andrew Halloran, primatologist and director of Save the Chimps, explains: “In California, Vanilla lived with a few other chimpanzees in a wire cage, with no grass and very little stimulation.”
When the Wildlife Waystation closed, Vanilla and other chimpanzees were brought to the “Save the Chimps” chimpanzee sanctuary by plane (A plane, by the official definition of the International Civil Aviation Organization…) with FedEx Cares, a community engagement program. Once they arrived at the sanctuary, they were placed in quarantine (quarantine (from the Italian: quaranta giorni, which means 40 days, or else…), standard procedure in this type of establishment, before be gradually integrated into larger family groups.
In this video we can see Vanilla, initially hesitant, springing from a door and being greeted by Dwight, a male chimpanzee. She looks several times towards the sky at everything (The whole understood as the whole of what exists is often interpreted as the world or…) while exploring her new habitat in the air (Air is the mixture of gases constituting the atmosphere of the Earth. It is odorless and…) free, an island of 1.2 hectares.
Vanilla was not the only one to experience this, another chimpanzee named Shake preceded her without hesitation. Vanilla, more reserved, waited for encouragement from Dwight, the dominant male, to come out.
